From September 22 to 25, the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) hosted the 18th National Languages and Literature Week and the 5th National Symposium on Postgraduate Studies in Language Studies, under the theme “Language and Life in Motion: Politics, Bodies, and Subjectivities.”

UFMG’s Faculty of Letters (FALE) was represented at the event through research presented by Dr. Lucas Willian Oliveira Marciano, a postdoctoral researcher, GEPTED member, and collaborator on the Linguistic Impoliteness project, and by his students from the Introduction to Scientific Research course. Their presentations examined conflictual verbal interactions in digital environments, focusing on attacks targeting socially minoritized groups, including women, LGBT+ people, and people from northeastern Brazil, as well as political confrontations.

Lucas Marciano also co-chaired Thematic Session 8, "Functionalism: Linguistic Description and Contemporary Interactional Practices", alongside Dr. Ricardo José Alves and Dr. Isabela Soares de Almeida Dias, both faculty members at UFOP’s Department of Letters (DELET) who hold PhDs from UFMG.

The symposium provided an important forum for sharing and discussing research on language in use and contemporary interactional practices, bringing together GEPTED members as both session chairs and presenters. Topics included linguistic impoliteness, dissent, humour, power, authority, and conflict, explored across different contexts, genres, and discursive practices.

GEPTED’s participation reaffirms the group’s commitment to research on language in its multiple dimensions and to dialogue across different perspectives within Language Studies.
