DIGITAL IMPOLITENESS

The corpus compiled and then shared is an initiative of the Project Digitally mediated discourse of the extreme right in Brazil and its effects on the rights of women and the LGBT+ community, funded by CNPq, Process number 404672/2023-0.

In this project, we investigate issues related to the role of impolite and indecent language in the erosion of Brazilian democracy. Our main focus is on manifestations of misogyny and homophobia on digital networks. Our intention is to disseminate knowledge and information to a broad audience interested in democracy, minority rights, conflict language and pluralism.

In this sense, the corpus brings together aggressive comments directed at three elected leaders, representatives Sâmia Bomfim, Duda Salabert and Érika Hilton, and a judge of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha. The comments were posted as a form of reaction to videos that went viral on YouTube, and are related to verbal attacks, insults and provocations perpetrated against them by far-right politicians, or by their supporters. They were collected and made available from the date of the video's publication until May 2024, when the data was extracted, and account for 6,653 comments with 136,643 words in total. The corpus is of interest to students and researchers in the fields of linguistics, human rights, digital media, political science and related topics.
