Research on anti-trans debates on Brazilian social media presented at conference in Madrid

A research article by Rieke Schröder, from the University of Münster, and Ana Larissa Oliveira, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), both members of the Digital Impoliteness project, was presented at the 4th Queer(y)ing Asylum Conference, held in Madrid, Spain.
Entitled “Sanctuary or Strategy? Imagining Gender-Critical Asylum in Europe through Brazilian Anti-Trans Social Media Debates”, the study examines how anti-trans debates on Brazilian social media invoke ideas of Europe as a place of asylum for people who identify with “gender-critical” positions. The presentation formed part of the panel “Weaponising Data, Narratives and Legitimacy”, which explored the relationships between data, narratives and legitimacy.
The paper brings language studies into dialogue with discussions of gender and asylum, contributing to international debate on the circulation of anti-trans discourse in Brazilian digital contexts.
Rieke Schröder also co-organised the conference and led the workshop “Positionality Beyond Statements: Unlearning Methods” with Sophia Zisakou, from Lund University. The workshop took place on 28 October 2026 as part of the Methodology & Theory Forum.
